What is Palliative Care?

Supportive care is interdisciplinary care that aims to relieve suffering and improve the quality of life, optimize function, and assist in decision-making for patients with advanced illnesses and their family.

Palliative Care is:
  • Specialized disciplinary medical care for people with serious illness
  • Aims to relieve suffering, improve quality of life, optimize function, and assist with decision making for patients with advanced illness, and their families
  • The goal is to improve quality of life for both the patient and the family
  • Supportive Care is provided by a team of doctors, nurses, and other specialists who work together with a patient’s doctors to provide an extra layer of support
  • It is appropriate at any age and at any stage in a serious illness and can be provided along with curative treatment or as the main focus of care
  • Supportive Care can help support the patient care continuum

Katy Supportive Medicine can provide support for the following:
  • Management of symptoms including pain, nausea, depression, anxiety, insomnia
  • Psychological and spiritual care, developing a support system to help the individual live as actively as possible
  • Navigation through the healthcare system, including help with advance directives
  • Emphasis on individual choice of privacy

These important services help:
  • Remain comfortable, preventing and relieving pain and suffering, improving patients’ quality of life
  • Maintain connection to family and friends
  • Foster vitality and independence







Patients who may benefit from these service include:
  • Those experiencing chronic, progressive pulmonary disorders, renal disease, chronic heart failure and progressive neurological conditions
  • Oncology patients
  • Patients with recurrent infections
  • Patients with non-healing wounds
  • Patients who have a history of recurrent hospitalizations
  • Pain or other severe discomforts requiring symptom management
  • Patients with psychosocial, emotional and/or spiritual distress
  • Patients who need coordination of care
 
Services at Katy Supportive Medicine are coordinated with patients’ community doctors and home health services so that continuity of care is facilitated. These important services help patients remain comfortable, relieving pain and suffering and improving quality of life.
